Hero Who Stopped Texas Gunman: I Couldn’t Have Stopped Him Without My AR-15

‘If I had run out of the house with a pistol and faced bullet proof vest and kevlar and helmets, it might have been futile.’
– Stephen Willeford

An AR-15 is not the weapon of choice for mass shootings.

An AR-15 is not the weapon of choice for mass shootings. Most shootings are committed with handguns, at 47.9 percent. AR-15’s and other semi-automatic “assault weapons” were only used in 24.6 percent of mass shootings, according to a Northeastern University study.

What we know

Firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives

Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year—or about 6,850 times a day. However, you can get better security, and ban every single firearm out there. But, that will not solve the main cause of the gun violence we see throughout the states, mental illness.

Not all mental illness may be a risk of harm to others. Now, when one sugggets that gun access should be restricted for people with mental illness, do they mean all of the conditions known to man? Or just some, or some in defined circumstances like veterns who have PTSD, or all people with social anxiety, or those who rub the door knob a hundred times before they can leave the room?

Needless to say that diagnosing these conditions mostly relies on the person’s report and the physicians’s observation, and the ability to rely on their report is vital. If we can raise proper attention and funds to strict mental health care from DAY ONE, we can see a sigifigant change in not just the well being of people but less gun violence in all.
